Giving away books

Sunday 25th March, 2012 - 2:54pm with 0 comments

I’m a bookworm, and I know it. But while my mind is filled with memories of all the wonderful books I’ve read, there are some that remain tucked at the back of my mind and stay there. There are words that I will forever remember, and there are books that I will treasure fo — okay enough getting sentimental.

I’m giving these books away. Most I will be willing to give for free, a couple not (I wouldn’t ask for more than a dollar). Local pickup only, that is, Sydney city area, as I work and study full-time, so sorry. These will be donated to my local library or a bookstore in a month if they’re not all gone.

If you live internationally but desperately want a book, that’s cool, but you do need to pay for shipping costs.

More to come – this list is by no means complete. Keep checking back.

These books are in good condition. Some are pre-loved pre-loved books, so they were pre-loved before I loved ‘em. Got it? Good. :D

The paper dump

Sunday 18th March, 2012 - 1:55pm with 0 comments

I have this irrational paranoia that someone is going to look through all the paper I put in the recycling. I feel like I have to tear it all to shreds. Nevertheless, I have thrown out a great deal of paper as part of The 71.

#41: An old doctor’s referral. I’d misplaced it and asked for another one, then I found it.
#42: Educational posters I bought back in 2001. I never really looked at them. I wanted them when I had them!
#43: Receipt for the Explosions in the Sky show I went to last year.
#44: Promotional CD of classical music.
#45: Promotional CD from some university (not the one I go to!).
#46: Pirated 50 Cent album (ooooh, badass…) as well as some other pirated CDs. Cough.
#47: Some mix CD I made, as well as its cover.
#48: Pages ripped from magazines. Some with recipes and some with articles.
#49: Homework and sheets from high school.
#50: A lot of worksheets and subject outlines from my bachelor’s degree. LOL.
#51: A stack of my personal diaries. Goodbye!
#52: Some old sheet music I didn’t really want.
#53: Some old zines that I made. Ew.

Edit – forgot a few.

#54: My one and only messenger bag. I gave it to my brother.
#55: Some free library bookmarks.
#56: A book my friends and I made for a science assignment in high school.

Poetry rant.

Saturday 17th March, 2012 - 8:54pm with 0 comments

I know I’m not like a huge famous poet or some crap, and people probably don’t really know this until later on, or until they learn, and that’s fine, but I can’t help but get heavily irritated at people who write poetry and don’t put commas after the ends of their lines. Poetry is written and when it is written it is written with the notion that someone is reading it out aloud. This is what I think every time I write a poem. I imagine it being read out.

According to Wikipedia.org, this is End-stopping in poetry:

An end-stopped line is a feature in poetry in which the syntactic unit (phrase, clause, or sentence) corresponds in length to the line. Its opposite is enjambment, where the sense runs on into the next line. According to A. C. Bradley, “a line may be called ‘end-stopped’ when the sense, as well as the metre, would naturally make one pause at its close; ‘run-on’ when the mere sense would lead one to pass to the next line without any pause.”

An example of end-stopping can be found in the following extract from The Burning Babe by Robert Southwell; the end of each line corresponds to the end of a clause.

As I in hoary winter’s night stood shivering in the snow,
Surprised I was with sudden heat, which made my heart to glow;
And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near,
A pretty babe all burning bright did in the air appear.

Therefore, if you wish to indicate that the line of your poem is the end of a clause, you might want to indicate that with a comma. Seeing as the Wikipedia definition contrasts end-stopping with enjambment, you should understand that when a line does not end with a form of punctuation, it usually runs on to the next line.

This is why it irritates me when I see poetry written with no commas in a stanza, and I can tell what the writer is thinking: pause at the end of every line. Well baby, you gotta indicate it. I’m not reading your whole poem in a breath.

Georgina

Friday 16th March, 2012 - 9:19pm with 0 comments

I need to think of a little paragraph to write for myself for my workplace’s website. I’m having trouble… yet according to James stealing bits of popular culture:

Georgina was born at the stroke of midnight on july 4, Year of the Frog. As the undisputed inventor of the internet, Georgie strives to make websites out of little more than cotton candy, loose change and an attitude that can only be described as…’adequate’.

The Memory Box dump

Saturday 10th March, 2012 - 3:23pm with 0 comments

Years ago I started keeping a memory box of little things, sentimental things, that reminded me of certain moments in my life. I would keep notes, photographs, awards, shells, anything.

You don’t really keep roses after they die, do you?

#21: An old broken necklace.
#22: An old broken watch bracelet.
#23: Assignments and worksheets from 2009.
#23: Assignments and worksheets from 2010.
#24: An old quiz book.
#25: An old puzzle book.
#26: A really large bundle of notes that I passed in class from years 2002 to 2007.
#27: When I first got my hair cut when I was 14, I kept some of the hair. Funnily enough, it’s lighter than my current hair colour. I threw this in the bin.
#28: Will I keep the letters? No, the memories are in my head.
#29: My rubbish bin is full. To the brim. With all the notes and letters of high school past.

The Item Purge begins!

Monday 5th March, 2012 - 9:52pm with 2 comments

So, I’m down to 51. I’ve gotten rid of twenty things.

#1: Four old high school diaries. I have no use for them.
#2. A razor holder. It was supposed to be something to stick on the wall, but I already have one that I stuck on the bathroom wall.
#3: An electronic organiser. It was battery-powered, cool in 1999, and a present from a family friend. I have a smartphone now, so there isn’t a need for this at all. :P
#4: A Vodafone information pack. I’m with Optus now and the information is possibly outdated.
#5: A high school employment folder organiser thing. It’s stupid and useless.
#6: A small joke book. All the jokes are lame.
#7: Receipt and photo envelope from photos I ordered in May 2011.
#8: A little brochure-booklet of 50 good books. I don’t need that.
#9: Two mini word-book things I got from the book club in primary school. They’re cute, I like them – but I don’t need them. I don’t see myself looking at them in the next five years.
#10: Sample CD of an episode of Supernatural.
#11: Mad Mex Menu (yeah… don’t ask).
#12: Old music newsletter from 2006.
#13: Small pink binder folder with beauty cards. I mean, my mum’s a beauty consultant and you can find everything on the internet. What’s the point?
#14: Old swirly bracelet. Not going to wear it as it’s out of shape, too small for my hand, and discoloured. :(
#15: Pink and yellow miniature doll hair combs. Why the heck am I keeping these?!
#16: Dried out fluffy pen (annoying to write with, ink not really replaceable).
#17: Dry glue stick.
#18: Bunch of old keychains.
#19: Two-year-old modelling clay (tell me about it).
#20: Toy rubber lizard.
